Exodus 16: Murmur
The background of the word translated “murmur” is detailed and complicated. It is used in a variety of ways. But when it is used as a verb, it is often related to the grumbling that cost this generation its inheritance. Four hundred years of promises from God—that He was keeping for them in their generation—and they lost it all by allowing themselves to be a generation of murmuring, grumbling, howling, whining, complainers who would not trust in His promises. This chapter is the beginning of the tragic party of the story that God chose to name “The Provocation” (Psalm 95:7-11; Hebrews 3:7-11). Do not let that heart be in you.
